Steve & Johnnie Return To WGN-AM For Labor Day Fill-In Role

For the second time in under a year, beloved WGN Radio overnight radio duo of Steve King and Johnnie Putman will be making their return to the Chicago airwaves. This will take place on Labor Day, as they fill in for the WGN-AM morning show, working the 5:00am-10:00am shift.

This will be a one-day-only treat for fans of classic WGN Radio, happening on September 1st.

The last time Steve King and Johnnie Putman were on the radio was a highly-regarded WGN-AM fill-in role during the week of Christmas this past December.

Steve & Johnnie will be able to work out of the station's famed showcase studio, with windows facing Michigan Avenue and Pioneer Court. This will allow some of their many fans the opportunity to stop by and wave at their favorite radio couple. For much of their almost three decades at WGN Radio, King and Putman did their overnight and late night shows in WGN-AM's secondary studio, away from the watchful eyes of street-side onlookers.

Budget cuts by an ownership that was mired in an ongoing bankruptcy resulted in the release of numerous WGN-AM veterans a few years ago, including King and Putman. The duo exited the station in December 2011.

The loss of Steve & Johnnie from WGN-AM was a devastating one to their legion of fans. For many years, their overnight show had been Chicago's #1 most-listened to radio program during those hours. The husband and wife team put on one of the finest overnight radio programs in the history of Chicago radio. Steve & Johnnie's fans aren't just Chicagoans, either. With its strong signal at night, WGN-AM can be heard in well over 30 states and up into Canada, not to mention being heard worldwide via the Internet. They received calls, texts, emails, and postings on their Yahoo Group and Facebook accounts from people listening from all over the country and world.

Together, Steve & Johnnie did over 6,200 shows for WGN-AM, most of which ran between 4-6 hours in length -- an incredible feat.

Along with the upcoming fill-in role, there is more good news for Steve & Johnnie fans...

In the near future, many of their former WGN-AM "Life After Dark" overnight show's archived in-studio musical performance videos will be coming back to the Steve & Johnnie page on the WGN-AM website. They will also be featured on the hosts' own website, SteveAndJohnnie.com. Among the dozens of artists found on these in-studio videos are show favorites Jim Peterik (with and without The Ides Of March), Tommy Emmanuel, Imelda May, Doyle Dykes, Cathy Richardson, and many more.

As for the various projects King and Putman have been working on since leaving full-time radio work, and especially recently... that will be discussed and revealed on their Labor Day radio show on WGN-AM. Longtime fans will want to tune in.
