News & Notes: CSN Chicago/WGN; Svengoolie; Me-TV; Antenna TV; the A.V. Club; ESPN 1000; Lisa Dent; More

This weekend's News & Notes contains ten more media news items worth mentioning, including: CSN Chicago & WGN get ready for another crosstown classic; Rich Koz's Svengoolie turns 33; Me-TV & Antenna TV celebrate Father's Day; the A.V. Club loses its local flavor; a website wonders if Jay Mariotti is the biggest asshole; ESPN 1000 joins Slacker Radio; Geraldo Rivera looks to grow his radio empire; Lisa Dent emcees a golf event; and Daniella Guzman & Stefan Holt emcee a luncheon event. All of the details are just below...

* * Round Two of the "BP Crosstown Cup" between the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs is this coming Monday-Wednesday (June 18-20) and Chicagoland television viewers will have choices to make. Comcast SportsNet Chicago and WGN Sports will both be airing all the games. For CSN Chicago, all three games will air on the cable network, with the Monday & Wednesday games using the White Sox broadcasting team, while Tuesday's game will feature the Cubs broadcasting team. On the same days, the WGN Sports telecasts of the games will have the opposite broadcast teams (Monday/Wednesday Cubs telecasts, Tuesday White Sox telecast). The only catch with WGN's broadcasts is that Monday night's game by the WGN Sports crew will not be seen on WGN-TV, but rather WCIU-TV/Channel 26 The U. The Tuesday & Wednesday games will be back on WGN-TV 9. All three games begin at 7:00pm on all of the stations. CSN Chicago is planning expanded two-hour long pre-game shows, starting at 5:00pm for all three nights. (WGN-TV will have its normal 30 minute pre-game shows on Tuesday & Wednesday.)

* * Tomorrow, June 16th, marks the 33rd anniversary of Rich Koz appearing on TV for the first time as Svengoolie. This occurred on WFLD-TV, and at that time, he was known as the "Son of Svengoolie," taking over the Sven role from his friend and mentor Jerry G Bishop. Of course, Koz's Svengoolie may be 33, but his schtick is both older & timeless. Koz/Svengoolie can now be seen weekends on Me-TV, WCIU-TV/The U, and U-Too.

* * Speaking of Me-TV, the Chicago-based classic television network will have a salute to Father's Day this coming Sunday with the "Dads of Me" marathon. Starting at Noon this Father's Day, Me-TV will play four hours of classic episodes of "Family Affair," "The Rifleman," "Make Room for Daddy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," all spotlighting Dads. For a complete list of episodes to be shown and times, visit this link HERE. Me-TV can be seen over-the-air on WCIU-TV's digital subchannel 26.3, as well as on most cable & satellite systems.

* * The other Chicago-based classic television network, Antenna TV, has even bigger plans for Father's Day. On Sunday morning, starting at 6:00am, the network will be airing its "Father's Day Fest with Father Knows Best," with non-stop classic episodes of "Father Knows Best." The 17 hour marathon continues on until 11:00pm Sunday night. For episode names and times, visit Antenna TV's schedule page HERE. Locally, Antenna TV airs on WGN-TV's digital sub-channel 9.2.

* * The local entertainment review and guide section of The Onion weekly newspapers is coming to an end. The non-satirical section of the satirical publication entitled A.V. Club will continue to have national content within it and the A.V. Club website will remain up, but after next week, all Chicago entertainment information will be gone. The A.V. Club has been based in Chicago since 2007. The cutbacks are due to financial reasons. The A.V. Club also has always had to deal with stiff competition from the more popular local weeklies The Chicago Reader and Time Out Chicago, which cover similar material inside their publications and websites.

* * Former Chicago Sun-Times columnist and Chicago radio host Jay Mariotti is not well liked by a great many, due to his negative style of sports commentating, the boorish way he treated co-workers and employers, his domestic violence issues, and so many other reasons why. The folks behind the Deadspin.com website are certainly no fans either. They really, really, really, really don't like the man. A new piece written today entitled "How To Not Be The Biggest Asshole In Media: 4 Lessons I Learned From Meeting Jay Mariotti And Reading His Awful Book" will surely prove that fact. It can be read at this link HERE.

* * Slacker Radio announced this week the addition of six ESPN Radio stations, including Chicago's WMVP-AM/ESPN 1000. These stations can be streamed via Slacker for free until mid-July. After that point, the stations will only be available to be heard on Slacker by Slacker Radio Plus and Slacker Premium Radio subscribers.

* * As has been expected for a great many months, Cumulus Media announced that it will be syndicating Geraldo Rivera's late morning New York-based radio show nationwide, starting in two months. His show has been airing on a Cumulus-owned New York station and shared with a Cumulus-owned Los Angeles station since earlier this year. Despite horribly low ratings (only a 0.5 in the all ages numbers in LA), Cumulus will be looking to make this political talk show a hit by airing it in as many markets as possible. Although there is no word on this yet, it is expected that Cumulus will push to have it heard here in Chicago on WLS-AM before the end of this year, most likely in the time slot between the morning show and Rush Limbaugh's syndicated show. That would mean the cancellation of a live & local talk show here. Both early morning hosts Don & Roma Wade and late morning hosts Bruce Wolf & Dan Proft have contracts that expire at the end of this year. It would not be surprising if at least one of those two shows is let go of within the next five months to air the less expensive Cumulus-owned syndicated fare.

* * On Monday, June 18th, the 25th Annual Midwest Golf Celebrity Pro-Am, which benefits the Special Olympics Illinois program serving athletes from DuPage, Kane and Kendall Counties, will be held at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles. The golf tournament matches up a foursome with one of numerous professional athletes, both current and former, in a scramble format. After the end of the tournament, starting around 4:00pm, there will be cocktails, dinner and various festivities. WUSN-FM/US99.5's Lisa Dent will be the emcee for the evening's events. For more information, visit this link HERE.

* * On Tuesday, June 19th, the not-for-profit Illinois Currency Exchange Charitable Foundation's "Back 2 School 2012" benefit luncheon will be held at Maggiano's Little Italy, 111 W. Grand in Chicago. The luncheon will help raise funds to help provide needed supplies for nearly 20,000 underserved Chicago area students. Hosting the event will be WMAQ-TV's morning news anchors Daniella Guzman and Stefan Holt. More information can be found HERE.
