WGN-AM Announces Winner Of 2012 Cubs Song Contest

At the start of February, WGN-AM announced they were holding a contest to come up with the official song of the 2012 Chicago Cubs radio broadcasts. At the start of this month, they announced the three finalists. Today, WGN-AM announced the winner of the contest.

The winner of the contest, gaining 47% of the over 8,000 votes cast over the last two weeks, was the alternative rock entry "Let's Go Cubbies" by The Fold. The announcement was made live on the air this morning on the Jonathon Brandmeier radio program.

The Fold's song now becomes the official WGN Radio Cubs Song of the 2012 baseball season and will be played near the start of every single WGN-AM Cubs baseball broadcast this year. Before the end of this month, The Fold will be invited to re-record the song in a professional Chicago recording studio. Additionally, the band will now be able to perform "Let's Go Cubbies" live on the air during Jonathon Brandmeier's Opening Day radio broadcast on April 5th, which will be a live remote from the Captain Morgan Club at Wrigley Field.

The band that created the winning song are not exactly amateurs. The Fold is a Villa Park, IL-based group that first formed back in 2002. They recorded a little-heard independent demo album right after they started out, selling it at shows in 2003. Eventually, they were signed to the indie record label Tooth & Nail and they released two professional full-length albums and one EP between 2006-2008. The single "Gravity" from their 2006 album "This Too Shall Pass" met with some brief success. In 2009, they released their third full-length album completely independently. Last year, The Fold recorded "The Weekend Whip," which is the theme song to the Lego TV & Cartoon Network series "Lego Ninjago: The Series." The Fold has also found itself gaining plenty of airplay in Contemporary Christian radio stations over the last few years.

The "Let's Go Cubbies" song by The Fold beat out its two competitors, which had a more country-rock sound, "Cubs Win" by 17 Candle and "Rockin' Right at Wrigley" by Derrick Procell.

The winning song can be heard or downloaded on the WGN Radio website at this link HERE.
