This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the 24-Hour Sports Radio format, which began with New York's WFAN-AM on July 1, 1987 -- a format that is now broadcast on over 800 radio stations nationwide, including Chicago's WSCR-AM and WMVP-AM. To recognize this milestone anniversary, the 2012 National Sports Radio Hall-of-Fame Awards Show, a celebratory fall benefit at the Chicago Theatre, is being announced today.
The 2012 National Sports Radio Hall-of-Fame Awards Show will be an industry-wide awards show, reunion and fundraiser. The event will celebrate the 25th anniversary and recognize the talent behind the format.
The Awards Show will feature the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Jeff Smulyan, Chairman/CEO of the Emmis Corporation and the man who started WFAN-AM. Making the presentation to Smulyan will be his past employee, former WFAN-AM General Manager and past CBS Radio President, Joel Hollander.
In all, eleven awards will be presented: the Lifetime Achievement Award, eight Hall-of-Fame Awards for performance over the past two and half decades, and two awards for performance over the past year. Hall of Fame Awards will be given for excellence in a local sports radio interview, local on-air promotion, local show, local personality, local station, national show and national personality as well as one award for the all time best sports radio blooper. Current Day Awards (representing 2012) will be handed out to one station and one local personality. Submissions for nomination are now underway and will be judged by an independent eight person committee, who all have some neutral radio programming background. Radio, television and print sports talkers Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon will serve as the event's Honorary Chairmen. The show's featured entertainer will be comedian Bobby Collins.
Chicago's very own WSCR-AM/670 The Score will serve as the local host-station for both the awards show and the event's Red Carpet and VIP Industry Reception. Sponsoring the awards show is Chicago's own MrSkin.com and Geico Insurance.
The awards show is being independently produced and directed by Bob and Michele Snyder, former sports radio industry executives. The show will be in memory of their daughter Jenny, who lost her life to Sudden Cardiac Arrest while playing soccer at age 17, a few years back. Proceeds from the event will benefit
Parent Heart Watch, the national non-profit organization protecting youth from Sudden Cardiac Arrest through early detection and intervention.
The 2012 National Sports Radio Hall-of-Fame Awards Show will take place on October 6th at 8:00pm at the historic Chicago Theatre, located at 175 N. State St. in downtown Chicago.
