Cochran is sounding good. I didn't like his kind of show in afternoons he did on the G years back... but what it certainly sounds great in the morning. I could get used to this.

He sounded like he was trying a little too hard but I liked the interaction with Dave Kaplan, Big O, etc.

I miss that with JB. Hint, hint.

Also, what's key here is that non-competes have been outlawed and unenforceable in Illinois since about 2001. Had a brain fart on that in yesterday's post.

    Welcome back, Steve.

Have listened all morning. 1 hour to go. Wow, I didn't realize how much I missed him. He sounds great! Looking forward to what slot he gets. Although, he really fits nice in the morning. It would be my permanent morning stop, and I've been gone since JBs been on.

Sometimes you don't fully realize the vast difference between former and current talent until a guy like Steve Cochran returns and cleans everybody's clock. THAT was a coherent, fast paced, entertaining morning show. If Jim DeCastro can engineer Steve into 5 to 9, Brandmeier into a less service-element-oriented shift, and keep all the egos happy, he'll have one fine radio product on the air.

And Kaplan rocked it last night. No knock on Brian or Andrea, but last night was a much better show. The chemistry wasn't there and the booth was too crowded. Now it's clean, focused and sharp.

The missing piece is a show akin to what Kathy and Judy brought to the table. Put Cochran 5 to 9, Bill and Wendy 9-noon, JB noon-3, Garry 3-7, Kap 7-midnight, Noonan 12-5. Put Milt on once a week on Sundays, and get Kogan back on once a week.

Really BK? You NEVER heard of one of the biggest names in Chicago radio from the last 20 years? Then, yeah, I guess this wouldn't be big news to you since you don't follow Chicago radio that closely then.

Can't believe I've been able to listen to GN this morning. Refreshing, understandable, adult, coherent - DeCastro, are you getting the message? Steve's segments with Spike, Coach Q, Kap, Skilling, Karen, Rick were outstanding. Damn, this is what GN is about.

Unfortunately, I now have to turn the dial until 3:00pm for Gary.

    I'm patient - been for 3 years.
Lord Stanley + new GN, doesn't get any better.

I didn't get a chance to listen today, but I'm glad to hear he's back for awhile. I never really got into his show before, but I never really disliked it either. I do have the sense that he's a really standup guy though, from his work with adopted kids and didn't he stick up for Milt when Metheny got in his face once? I'll give Cochran's show another shot.

The station is starting to feel more like its old self now, but also pretty fresh.

It's becoming incredibly clear WGN wants Cochran in a daily slot. Once McConnell's days are over, Brandmeier will go back 5-9 or 5:30-9 with Cochran 9-noon and Noonan noon-3 following. Quite the lineup.

Didn't think that was feasible even 6 months ago, but a lot can happen in radio. And it has at WGN.

Don't care that much for Johnny B but Cochran belongs back at his right wing station.
'Noticed he was already carrying water for Rauner for governor. Couldn't he squeeze in with Bruce and that other dude on 'LS?
Kaplan's show was pretty good last night, I was pleasantly surprised.

If I recall, both Bob Collins and Spike were leaning more Republican than Democrat. Doesnt bother me.

Im just looking to be entertained. If there's something be talked about that I'm not interested in, I do what comes naturally, I change the dial to something else!

Bob Collins was very much a Republican and often had Republican politicians as guests. However, he never, EVER would let his program dip into Rush Limbaugh-esque territory. Bob Collins did not push any GOP talking points, never had a hidden (or public) agenda, presented facts fairly, and most importantly, was incredibly respectful of others' opinions. Not that his show delved into politics often, but when it did, he was always fair & respectful. That is how it is supposed to be done!

Most political talkers, or talkers on political-oriented stations on the radio today are the exact opposite of that. It is simply "my side is right and your side is should be run out of my country!" There is little respect for differing opinions.

Regarding Steve Cochran, I believe if he does the same type of show he did when he was last on WGN-AM, he will be more like how Bob Collins was. Listeners may know where he stands on an issue politically, but he will be fair and respectful of differing opinions... and with Cochran, it will be all be done with a smile and witty comment as the icing on the political cake.

I think calling Cochran one of the "biggest names" in Chicago radio over the last 20 years is quite a stretch. All this shilling for this guy who has accomplished what exactly is nauseating and undeserved. Come on, you can be more objective than that. Cochran will never keep his ego under check for long either. If this is what GN listeners want, you get what you deserve.

I agree with you Larz; you knew Bob Collins was a republican, but he was fair. Steve Cochran can do politics, but will then go on to something silly the next minute. Pig Virus should have never had fired him. I believe that if Cochran did mornings all these years, he'd be at the top of the heap as we speak.

Like I said, all they needed to do was straighten out the no compete clause in his deal and through an amicable agreement between both stations, it was apparently lifted and now he's back to where he belongs on WGN-AM. Again, as long as he tones down the rhetoric and his self-promotion and lays a little low on his comedy and stuff, he should be just fine.

Now the question still remains, what happens to JB if Cochran can make a go of this in the mornings? I still like the first lineup I proposed on here earlier with Leff and Snyder taking that 5-9 AM slot, then Cochran jumps into the 9 AM-Noon slot, followed by Brain Noonan from Noon-3 PM and then adios to MM very soon. I'm also predicting that once MM is finished here by the month's end or end of next month at the very latest, he's either going to stay in Cincy or have a gig in Detroit, where his buddy Metheny is working right now. Just a guess.

Paul G. - say what? A guy's pushing 20 years+ as a featured talk talent in market #3, most of those years on one of the market's leading stations and biggest biller. Every time he is freed up from one station another snaps him up, right up to this day. And you ask what he's accomplished?

I want to be measured in my appraisal of Steve's return to WGN this morning as it was one day with no future promised. Yet I was struck almost immediately in the "old shoe" quality of Steve on 720.

As a long time listerner of WGN the past three years have been challenging. There still was quality on the air, but it was interspersed with poorly placed hosts and resulted in me changing the station or turning off the radio altogether. I slowly changed my "alway on" habit with 720 to the point where the time I had the station on was notable.

All throughout this time I kept some semblance of hope that this theoretical concept I once had a great fondness for would somehow be recaptured in the future.

This morning hearing Cochran's professionalism, command and interaction with the assembled talent reminded me what a historic major market radio institution could sound like in this day.

Excuse my words if they seem hyperbolic, but I believe WGN is part of Chicago and the entire Upper Midwest. This morning's show was a pleasure.

Cochran sounded great this morning on WGN. What a sigh of relief. Jimmy get rid of Johnny B his show is out dated and old. I can't even listen to that mess in the morning it hurts my ears.

Hire Cochran for the morning show and move the show hours back to 5a-9a. Bring Nonnan in 9A-12P and leave McConnell along at 12p-3P.

Bottom line GET RID OF JOHNNY B and his entire Morning Zoo NOW!!!!!!! He is sinking WGN.

Best morning radio WGN has ever had period? Cut and paste 1980s schtick that he's been doing for 30 years. Doesn't work any more and Cochran, who should have rightfully been the morning replacement for Spike, will be there before too long.

I'm with SportsGuy. JB has been one of radio's best for many years. I just don't understand what he's all about these days. Poor fit, or the instability of his current working environment, inability to see a need to reassess his schtick and remake himself for a new day and new context... Whatever, it doesn't seem to work all that well.

Im not an anti-JB, but his bits arent overally original as well. I've heard him repeat stuff (either in the same day or from one day to the next) over and over again. The addition of Buz Killman has helped, but overall, his style and the morning stuff that WGN needs (lots of news, traffic, sports) isnt really working. Thats why I suggested that he stay @ GN, just move to late mornings. I think he'd get a huge following on the internet as well.

@Xmitter, they also need to launch MM out of his shift and out of town and effective as quickly as possible and once that happens (and it will be very soon), then the station is worth listening to once again, I do agree with you on the JB thing...his show is just getting old and tired and needs a refresher like Leff & Snyder and if they can reteam those two from 5-9 AM, they'll be a force in mornings with Cochran following from 9 AM - Noon and Noonan from Noon - 3 PM. That's a solid lineup.

JB in his current incarnation couldn't hold the mic for Bob Collins or Spike. Truth be told, I actually enjoyed John Williams more in the mornings than I do JB. I don't even turn on GN until 3pm anymore.

I know it's not popular, but I'm not really liking Leff too much overnights either. I work nights so I have heard him a lot. It just seems he doesn't take a stand on any issue, insteading trying to be overly neutral to avoid offending anyone. Way too bland.......... I don't even care if the host has a different opinion on an issue than I hold. I'll still listen, but for crying out loud, take a position.

PLEASE bring Steve Cochran back. JB DOES belong back in the 80's. He's not even polite to guests. He's very rude at times. And his sense of humor is stupid. I listened to him once and that was it. I don't like the woman from 12 to 1 either. So basically the radio is off until 3 when Garry comes on, and I know I'm not the only one who has left WGN since you took off the air almost everyone who was good . . . Spike, Kathy and Judy, Steve Cochran, Steve and Johnnie, John Williams. WHAT were you guys thinking????? Or were you???

Shirley, we don't know what's going to happen with JB as he's on vacation right now and it's 50-50 my guess as to whether he does return or not as last I heard, he's working without a contract. I still feel and believe Cochran will be there from 9 AM - Noon and Noonan from Noon - 3 PM to replace the [possibly] outgoing MM (interesting word synergy there...Noonan at Noon) and Roth has since left the station. S&J won't be coming back as their days are far behind them and Leff is doing a great job in the latenight hours but still hoping he and Wendy re-team once again to take JB's spot from 5-9 AM and allow Nick D to take the latenight shift over from Midight-5 AM, so just keep on looking at the website for the latest details in WGN-AM getting back to respectability once again (cheap plug for Larz's website as well).

Hello! I have been a long time listener. Franklin Mc Cormick is my earliest memory on WGN. I am so happy Steve Cochran is back. Now, where to put him. Firstly, you never know what you have til' it's gone. I almost quit listening to GN entirely. I split my time between WIND, WBBM, WLS , The Score, and AM 1000. I found Steve on WIND when trying to get the Blackhawks game. I Then found him filling in for the dreaded JB. This guy turns my stomach. He seems to make fun of his diseased mother and others close to him. He just is not WGN material as far as I'm concerned. I was very disappointed when King John was let go also along with Spike. In all fairness, I was not a big Kathy and Judy fan. When they took over their time slot, after listening for a while I quit listening to their show. My keepers that don't get enough air time are Brian Noonan, #1, recently re-aquired Steve Cochran,#2, Low Manfredini, Nick D., #3, and Orion. You should keep Garry but not in afternoon drive. He sounds like he has dislexia when attempting to read commercials and he has too many phobias. I only listen to him now to hear the weather forecast with Tom S. You need somebody new for overnights, Bill's voice is just too octave challenged to be comfortable to listen to. you just never know when it is going to break but it constantly does. Finally, Mike McC. is very good but I don't think I would air him after lunch hour, Give it to someone else. All in all, I would get rid of jb entirely. Buy out his contract if need be! It sounds from other web sites that it was tough to get him under contract, I don't know why. I will completely abandon the WGN ship if he stays. I already listen to Big John Howell and Amy on WIND for the morning drive. I found them while looking for someone else to listen to beside jb. I know WGN is looking to identify with a different age group but they should try to keep the boomer age group they already have or had. I am 62 and WGN is trying to tune me away!
