It was on this day eleven years ago, that Chicago lost beloved WGN-AM morning show host Bob Collins to a freak private airplane accident. This audio clip (courtesy of
Time Warp Radio & WBBM-AM's Bart Shore) is an aircheck that has the events of this fateful afternoon, as they played out live on one of Chicago's all-news stations of that time, WMAQ-AM. John Dempsey was the news anchor in studio and Bart Shore was up in the helicopter near the scene of the accident, reporting on the two downed plans. (Mike Krauser from the WMAQ newsroom is also heard.) As time went on, it became obvious to all that it was indeed their radio brother "Uncle Bobby" who perished inside one of those two planes. The news is as sad today, as it was on the afternoon of February 8th, 2000. (Running time: 18:38)
