In 1964, WGN-AM's overnight host was Franklin MacCormack, who played quieter, romantic songs after Midnight, occasionally reading long-form poetry -- all in contrast to the station's normal news, talk, and sports programming during the daytime. One segment of the "All Night Showcase" program he hosted was called "The Torch Hour," featuring the softer music of years gone by. This audio clip contains most of a "Torch Hour" of MacCormack's and more from the very early morning hours of August 15, 1964 -- exactly 48 years ago tonight. The old music, poetry, live-read commercials (Meister Brau beer) and 2:00am news/sports update (he also served as news anchor) are left intact here. (Running time: 56:18)
