In 1971, WLS-AM briefly experimented with a new kind of jingle package called "Pop Tops" (as did a few other stations nationwide). "Pop Tops" would come on over the beginning instrumentals of songs (over the "tops" of the pop songs), with hired singers using some lyrics from the song and adding the station's ID. Here are five examples of this with the WLS jingle used in The Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye," Donny Osmond's "Sweet and Innocent," Ocean's "Put Your Hand in the Hand," Bread's "If" and Diana Ross' "Reach Out I'll Be There." (Running time: 1:47)
