WLFM-LP -- now branded as simply "Smooth 87.7" -- will be starting a brand new morning show next Monday. It will be "Sandy & Kenny G in the Morning."
The new radio program will star Sandy Kovach, a radio personality out of Detroit, MI, who most recently was part of WVMV-FM in Detroit when it was a Smooth Jazz formated station. (Just over a year ago, Smooth Jazz was dropped from WVMV, as were the personalities, in favor of a new Top 40 station.) She has been doing weekend/fill-in work in Detroit and voice-over projects for the past year. She now will be the host of the nationally syndicated morning show for Broadcast Architecture's Smooth AC Radio Network and Smooth Jazz Radio Network.
Her co-host will be mega-star saxophonist Kenny G. For this show, Kenny will not be a stereotypical co-host that sits next to the partner and banters on air. Instead, Kenny G will contribute special features and additional content for the program every weekday morning.
The current host of the morning show for both BA's Smooth networks and WLFM, Brian Culbertson, recently released a new CD and is choosing to focus on his music career now, which is how the new morning show came to be created.
Understandably, Sandy Kovach is thrilled about the opportunity to now be heard nationally and in major markets like Chicago. She said in a statement this month: "What an honor to be paired with someone like Kenny G. I've been such a fan for years, I'm still pinching myself. It's also going to be so cool being on 87.7, an amazing station in one of the top music cities in the world. I'm looking forward to making lots of new friends."
The Grammy Award-winning (and current nominee) Kenny G said about having his new show air on Smooth 87.7: "I'm super excited to be spending my weekday mornings with Sandy. I love Chicago so much and truly love the idea of being on the air in Chicago every weekday morning."
WLFM Program Director Rick O'Dell says in a statement today that he has been a fan of Sandy Kovach for many years. "I've followed her career very closely going back to the days when she was a key member of the team that turned WVMV into a Smooth Jazz powerhouse in the early 2000s. Like me, I'm sure our listeners will embrace what Sandy brings to mornings: a genuinely bright and upbeat personality along with a solid knowledge of our music. And having a musician of the stature of Kenny G on the morning show team will be a tremendous asset," said O'Dell.
Rick O'Dell's own live & local show will follow Sandy & Kenny G's morning show every Monday-Friday on 87.7 FM.
Pat Kelley, WLFM's Senior Vice-President and General Manager, stated today: "The establishment of 87.7FM as a major radio station in Chicago continues, and the addition of Sandy and Kenny G to morning is a very exciting next step. Please join me welcoming them to the 87.7FM family."
The "Sandy & Kenny G in the Morning" show starts on Monday, January 3, 2011. It will air each weekday morning on WLFM from 6:00am-9:00am. Local traffic & weather updates from Metro Traffic will continue to be part of the morning programming.
