Carlos Hernandez Gomez, CLTV's political reporter, passed away this evening at the age of 36. Hernandez Gomez was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2008. Despite numerous surgeries and procedures, and bravely battling for better health this past year, he unfortunately lost his battles with cancer and other health issues. Earlier today, he was rushed to Northwestern Memorial after a blood clot moved from his leg toward his lung. He also suffered a heart attack from all of this. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital this Sunday night.
Hernandez Gomez had been with CLTV since 2005. He expertly covered local politics and local court & legal battles for the station, especially when politics was involved. He also was the station's expert on national politics.
Prior to his work with CLTV, Carlos Hernandez Gomez did similar political reporting for WBEZ-FM. He did written reporting for the Chicago Reporter and La Opinion.
An avid Chicago sports fan, he even picked up a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Sports Reporting for "The Legend of the Billy Goat Curse" in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, WGN-TV reporter Randi Belisomo-Hernandez.
No funeral or wake announcements have been made.
Carlos' Facebook page
has turned into somewhat of a memorial page, as his many friends are now posting loving thoughts to Carlos and his wife.
