WGN-TV has hired part-time, freelance traffic reporter Erin McElroy to be the newest news anchor for their 4:30am newscast, as well as traffic person and fill-in anchor for the WGN Morning News. She begins in her new role on Thursday, April 28th.
McElroy, who was previously known by the name Erin Mendez when she joined CLTV & WGN a few years ago, will be returning to her maiden name of McElroy, which was also the name she was known by when she worked in smaller markets, including Milwaukee's WDJT-TV.
Though she was born and raised in the one of the farthest northwestern points in the continental Unites States -- Bellingham, Washington -- she attended college at Columbia College Chicago, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism. Ever since then, she has lived and worked in and around Chicago and the Midwest. McElroy has held past reporter and anchor positions at WREX-TV in Rockford, WDJT-TV in Milwaukee and WSBT-TV in South Bend.
In May 2007, she helped launch "CommuterCast"
on the WGN-TV website, an online traffic resource that is a partnership with Traffic.com, and that provides constantly updated travel information each afternoon. She was the online program's original host/reporter. In addition to doing traffic, Erin McElroy has also been a general assignment reporter for both WGN-TV and sister-station CLTV.
Erin McElroy replaces Valerie Warner, who left WGN-TV on February 18th. Warner will be the new co-host of WLS-TV's new "Windy City Live" 9:00am morning show, when it makes its premiere in late May.
News of the Erin McElroy/Mendez hiring was first broken earlier today
by Time Out Chicago's media writer Robert Feder. The news was later confirmed by WGN Morning News staffers via Twitter
