Former WGN-AM morning host Greg Jarrett is returning to the airwaves next week, guesting on WIQI-FM/FM News 101.1. Jarrett has been off the Chicago airwaves since being released by WGN Radio in early December.
All next week, January 16-20, from 5:00am-9:00am, Greg Jarrett will join FM News 101.1's regular news anchors Rob Hart and Mary Ellen Geist. He will help in covering the top news stories of the day and adding his own take on the stories. Station insiders insist that this is NOT a "try-out" or a permanent addition to the station. This is just a one-week guest spot for news man. It also is a reunion of sorts for Jarrett & Hart who worked together well on WGN-AM, as well as for Jarrett & Geist, who worked together briefly in Los Angeles and San Fransisco. On December 2nd, WGN-AM management decided to take the talk station in a different direction and parted ways with Greg Jarrett, who still had a few months to go on his three-year contract. Jarrett, who just recently celebrated his 41st anniversary in radio, joined WGN-AM in June 2009. An unknown to Chicago audiences, Jarrett was given the position due to his vast resume of news experience, including many years at San Fransisco's KGO-AM and as a news correspondent for two decades with ABC News. During that time, he covered news in Iraq, Bosnia, Somalia, as well as all over the U.S. Though he had improved the ratings at WGN-AM over the two morning shows that preceded his, the journalistic news-based approach to his show never quite caught on with the WGN loyalists who wished for less of a departure from the more lighter personality-type of morning show that WGN-AM was long known for. Jarrett was #1 in the all ages Arbitron ratings for his time slot for 21 out of the 30 months he was there (#2 the other 9 months). FM News 101.1 made its debut at the end of July to mixed reviews. The station has been in a fairly constant state of change since taking to the airwaves just over five months ago, changing from a news/entertainment/commentary station to what is now a more traditional, but up-tempo all-news station. It has yet to promote itself to the general public, so very few even aware of its existence so far. Next week's guest appearance by Greg Jarrett is the first true special "stunt" done by the station to attract listeners. A large promotional advertising push for the station will be coming most likely in a few weeks. ![]()
