Chicago radio veteran Scott Childers has been promoted to Program Director of WSSR-FM/Star 96.7. This comes after many months of being the Assistant Program Director and then the "Interim" Program Director for the station. Childers will remain Star 96.7's afternoon drive host, as well.
The move was made official yesterday by NextMedia General Manager Patrick Pendergast, who sent out a memo to all staffers of the NextMedia Chicagoland cluster, praising Scott Childers, stating "his experience and 'ear' has most certainly been brought to bear with Star's success as of late." Childers had been the station's Interim PD since the end of August 2011, when J.J. Duling exited the company. He has been with WSSR-FM since the Spring of 2008 and with NextMedia since 2004. In a statement this afternoon, Scott Childers said: "I am honored to lead a great on-air staff and this wonderful brand we have in Star 96.7! In a way, this brings me full circle as I got my start as a part-time jock on WJTW in the late '80's, which eventually became Star 93.5 in this same building -- the precursor to Star 96.7." Scott Childers has been a part of the Chicago radio landscape for well over 22 years. Many may know him from his nearly 14 years with Metro Traffic, where he served as an on-air reporter, Assistant Program Director and studio supervisor. His voice was heard delivering reports on such stations as WBBM-AM, WBBM-FM, WMAQ-AM, WVAZ-FM, WUSN-FM, WSCR-AM, WLS-AM, WGN-AM (where he often did more than just traffic with Dean Richards and Ron Hart), as well as numerous suburban stations. He also did some traffic reporting on television, working on WMAQ-TV's "First Thing In The Morning" and later on WFLD-TV's "Fox Thing in The Morning."Most will probably know Childers for his work on music radio stations as a DJ. He has worked at Chicagoland stations over the last almost 23 years such as: WJTW-FM, WWBZ-FM, WXLC-FM, WPNT-FM, WNND-FM, WTMX-FM, WERV-FM, and of course, WSSR-FM. At WNND-FM/Windy 100, he was the station's midday host for many years. At WERV-FM, he worked as the afternoon (and later midday) host, as well as the station's Assistant Program Director. In his spare time, he also operates the Internet radio station, 92.1 The X, which plays a Classic Hits format featuring many rarely heard songs. That is far from his only web-based project, either. Childers is the webmaster of the highly-regarded website WLSHistory.com, detailing out the famous Chicago radio station's life story in words, pictures and audio. He also operates his own website, which features the Chicago Radio Time Capsule, a historical look at many local radio stations of the past, including WWBZ-FM/103.5 The Blaze and WMAQ-AM. Additionally, he is the webmaster & designer for various radio stations sites, including a pair of NextMedia stations, with his Munchkin Studios. If his web work wasn't enough of a hobby to keep him busy, Scott Childers has also been a licensed amateur (ham) radio operator since he was 13 years old and is involved with many amateur radio operator organizations around Chicagoland. In 2008, he authored the greatly-received book, "Chicago's WLS Radio," which takes a look back at the entire history of the heritage Chicago radio station and includes over 200 rare photographs. The book was part of the "Images Of America" series by Arcadia Press. Scott Childers, a Columbia College Chicago graduate, is a Chicago native, who now lives in the southwest suburbs. ![]()
