This weekend's News & Notes has eight local media news items, including: great news for the fans of Jonathon Brandmeier's TV show; a Super Sunday for WSCR-AM and WRTO-AM; Brian Sherman has fun in Milwaukee; Kevin Manno has fun on YouTube; Dick Biondi is sock-hopping again; Nick Digilo goes to the movies again; AddictedToRadio.com and Dance Factory are nominated for awards; and Harpo Studio's "The Rosie Show" slims down. All of the details are here...
* * Fans of Jonathon Brandmeier and the locally-produced television show of his, entitled simply "Brandmeier," will be happy to know that the TV show has been renewed for a second season. The show, which started last Fall with a ten week experimental run on WMAQ-TV and its digital sub-channel Chicago Nonstop, will be returning to both stations once again this spring, most likely in April. The weekly, 30-minute local-only television show features Johnny B having some fun with the news headlines of the week, topical issues, and special guests. It will be taped each week at NBC Tower in downtown Chicago on a set created this past Summer just for the "Brandmeier" show. News of Brandmeier's 2011 return to Chicago television was first broken HERE and HERE. ![]() * * For those unable to watch the Super Bowl on TV tomorrow, the big game can be heard on the radio in Chicago, as well. WSCR-AM 670 will carry the Dial Global/Westwood One broadcast of the game, starting at 3:00pm. For the second year in a row, the game will be called by Kevin Harlan & Boomer Esiason, with James Lofton & Mark Malone as sideline reporters, and Jim Gray & Scott Graham as pre-game/studio hosts. For those looking for the Spanish language telecast, WRTO-AM 1200 will carry the Univision Deportes broadcast of the game starting at 5:00pm. Rafael "El Alcade" Hernandez Brito and Raul Striker Jr. will call the game, with Joaquin Duro as sideline reporter. WRTO-AM will also have a pre-game show live from Lucas Oil Stadium starting at 4:00pm. It will be a special edition of Univision Deportes' "Locura Deportiva" (translation: "Sports Madness"). ![]() * * Former WKQX-FM/Q101 morning show co-host Brian Sherman has found new work. He is now doing some part-time and fill-in work at WLUM-FM, Milwaukee, WI's Alternative station. The man who hired him for this new role, WLUM-FM's Program Director Jacent Jackson, is a former WKQX-FM Program Director. ![]() * * Another former WKQX-FM/Q101 radio personality is keeping busy with a new video project. Kevin Manno, along with musician/keyboardist/vocalist Tim Convy (Ludo, The New Heathers), is now doing a new web series called "Yes, Dude!" The pair of friends talk about current events in their own light-hearted way. The first two episodes are now posted up and can be seen on their own YouTube page HERE. Kevin Manno left Q101 in August 2010 to become the co-host of MTV's new entertainment show "The Seven." MTV has since canceled the program and not yet found a new role for Manno. ![]() * * WLS-FM's living legend Dick Biondi will be doing another of his "Sock Hops" later this month. For the second February in a row, Biondi will be doing his mobile DJ dance party at the Whiting Knights of Columbus Hall (1120 119th St, Whiting, IN) on February 25th from 6:30pm-Midnight (Dick Biondi starts at 8:00pm). Tickets for "The Night Dick Biondi Came to Town" are $20 and can be purchased by calling 219-934-0910. Proceeds benefit the Knights of Columbus, which supports organizations throughout northwest Indiana. ![]() * * Next Tuesday, February 7 will be the latest get-together of the Nick Digilio Film Club -- a monthly gathering of film, food & fun, hosted by WGN-AM's Nick Digilio. The movie being shown will be the 2002 release, "Punch Drunk Love," starring Adam Sandler & Emily Watson, and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The event will begin at 7:00pm Bogart's Restaurant, located on the 2nd floor of Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18 (9701 Bryn Mawr Ave, Rosemont), and then move upstairs to the state of the art Muvico Premium Theatre for the film at 8:00pm. Nick Digilio will introduce the film and then host a discussion of it immediately afterward. The ticket price to attend is only $10, which can be purchased in advance HERE or at the door. (Price does not include food & drinks.) ![]() * * A pair of Chicago radio stations have been nominated for awards at the 27th annual International Dance Music Awards. The winners will be announced at the Winter Music Conference, held on March 16-25 in Miami Beach, FL. The two local nominees are Chicago's AddictedToRadio.com (formerly 1ClubFM.com), which is up for Best Radio Station (Global), and WCPQ-FM, which is up for Best Terrestrial Radio Station. WCPQ-FM is nominated for its nightly brokered program "Dance Factory," not for its WCPT-AM simulcasted political talk format during the daytime. Those interested can vote now at this link HERE. ![]() * * Crain's Chicago Business' Lynne Marek reports that Rosie O'Donnell's show, which tapes at Chicago's Harpo Studios, is being forced to lay off as many as 30 Chicago staffers. "The Rosie Show," which airs on OWN, has been desperately struggling to find an audience and after a decent start, is now very low-rated. The show recently changed over to a smaller studio, removing some segments of the show, and pre-recording parts of it without a studio audience. This means that the large production staff is no longer needed, prompting the layoffs. ![]()
