The Chicago White Sox have announced their broadcast schedule for the upcoming 2012 season. As was the case last year, games will be heard on the radio locally on WSCR-AM, on local television on Comcast SportsNet Chicago, WGN-TV, WCIU-TV, and on national television on FOX and ESPN.
Comcast SportsNet Chicago (CSN) will televise the most regular season White Sox games with 101 broadcasts. (The Chicago White Sox are 20% owners in Comcast SportsNet Chicago.) At least six of those games will broadcast on CSN+ due to conflicts with other sporting events scheduled to appear on CSN. The CSN+ games will most likely be televised on CLTV, but a check of the CSNChicago.com website the day of the game to see exactly where to find the telecast is recommended. This will be CSN's eighth season televising White Sox games. The first White Sox telecast for CSN will be the opening game of the season, on Friday, April 6th, an away game against the Texas Rangers. CSN also will air the home opener on Friday, April 13th, as the White Sox take on the Detroit Tigers. WGN-TV will televise 30 White Sox games this season, beginning with the club’s second game of the year, on Saturday, April 7th, again against the Texas Rangers. WGN-TV has been carrying Chicago White Sox broadcasts for a total of over 40 years. All of the White Sox games broadcast on WGN-TV during the 2012 regular season will also be seen nationally on WGN America. The WGN-TV production crew will televise an additional 25 night games this season, but all on WCIU-TV. The first game on WCIU-TV will be on Tuesday, April 10th, as the White Sox take on the Cleveland Indians. For all games broadcast on CSN, CSN+, WGN-TV and WCIU-TV, the broadcast team will again be the tandem of Ken "Hawk" Harrelson on play-by-play and Steve Stone providing analysis. This is the broadcasting duo's fourth consecutive season together. A minimum of five White Sox games will be shown nationally on FOX's Saturday "Game of the Week" -- seen locally on WFLD-TV. The first FOX telecast will be on April 21st, as the White Sox take on the Seattle Mariners. ESPN will air at least one White Sox game this year, kicking off their "Sunday Night Baseball" broadcast season with the White Sox taking on the Texas Rangers on Sunday, April 8th. Later this season, additional White Sox weekend games could possibly be taken away from local broadcasts and added to the national ESPN or FOX schedules. All television broadcasts on CSN, WGN-TV, WCIU-TV, FOX and ESPN will be in HD. WSCR-AM 670 remains the flagship radio home for the team and will broadcast all 162 regular season White Sox games. Returning once again for The Score will be the broadcast team of former White Sox pitcher Ed Farmer on play-by-play and former White Sox outfielder Darrin Jackson on color commentary. WSCR-AM will have pre- and post-game shows with host Chris Rongey. Conspicuously absent for the first time in eight seasons was any mention of Spanish-language broadcasts. For the last seven seasons, many games (56 during the 2011 season) were broadcast in Spanish on WRTO-AM/La Tremenda 1200. However, insiders report to CRM that the White Sox, who have long coveted getting their game broadcasts on the FM band, have been in talks with ESPN Deportes to have many of their games broadcast on the new ESPN Deportes Chicago airwaves. On February 1st, ESPN Deportes Chicago made its debut on the radio translator W248BB, the 250 watt transmitter heard within the Chicago city limits on 97.5 FM. It is also heard on WNUA-FM's HD2 channel, in the northern suburbs on WKRS-AM 1220 (which also made its debut on February 1st), Clear Channel's iHeartRadio app, and on the websites ESPNDeportesChicago.com and WKRS.com. Assuming a deal can be reached with ESPN Deportes, expect an announcement coming from the Chicago White Sox regarding the new arrangement and new Spanish broadcasting team later this month.
