Chicago Media Outlets Win 2012 National Headliner Awards

Earlier this month, the The Press Club of Atlantic City announced the winners of the 2012 National Headliner Awards. A few Chicago media outlets were handed the awards recognizing journalistic excellence. Here is a look at the local winners...

The Awards are divided between Print Division (newspapers, magazines, photography), Broadcast Division (radio, television), and Online Division.

In the Print Division, the Chicago Tribune won a first place prize and a third place prize.

Education writing by an individual or team
First Place:
"Sexual assaults on college campuses"

Environmental writing by an individual or team
Third Place:
"Chicago and Great Lakes beat reporting"

Initially, the Chicago Tribune's First Place win was also give the "Best of Show" ribbon. Soon after, that was taken away by the Press Club of Atlantic City and given to The Associated Press instead. An administrative error was blamed on the mistake.

In the Broadcast Division, WBEZ-FM and WGN-TV won high honors, while WTTW-TV was also recognized.

There were no local winners in the Online Division.

The Press Club of Atlantic City was founded in 1934 and handed out its first National Headliners Awards in 1935, making it one of the oldest awards honoring the best of journalism. Judging is done by a panel of journalists in Atlantic City, based only on the entries received by the nominees themselves.
