This month, Kye Martin will be joining WMAQ-TV/NBC 5 as its newest traffic and transportation reporter. Starting July 23rd, Martin will be delivering traffic reports for the weekday morning news from 4:30am-7:00am, as well as covering transportation issues as needed for other NBC 5 newscasts.
Since July 2008, Kye Martin has worked for NAVTEQ Traffic/Radiate Media. From there, she immediately became an exclusive contractor to local Tribune-owned cable station CLTV as its morning and afternoon traffic reporter, and soon after also was seen mornings on sister-station WGN-TV, where she was the primary fill-in traffic person for the morning newscast. Using her hard news background, Martin was also able to fill-in as a news anchor at CLTV. Additionally, she wrote a traffic blog for the WGN-TV website, entitled "Double Yellow Lines."
A native of Seattle, WA, Martin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Washington State University in Pullman, WA. She began her broadcasting career in radio as a reporter for all-news KMPH-FM in Fresno, CA. From there, she became a general assignment reporter and morning news anchor for over four years at Fresno's KMPH-TV. That was followed by becoming a general assignment reporter for KTXL-TV in Sacramento, CA for almost two years. While working in California, Kye Martin fell in love with a Chicago native, which eventually brought her to the Windy City to get married and to her job with NAVTEQ.
Martin lives within Chicago with her husband, their twin sons and their dog. A bicycling enthusiast, she likes to ride her bike to work when possible.
Frank Whittaker, NBC 5 Station Manager and Vice-President of News, said today: "I'm pleased that Kye Martin is joining NBC 5 News as our traffic and transportation reporter. We are bringing traffic back to our news studio and Kye will be joining the rest of the morning team at Studio 5. Mike Lorber will continue to report from Sky 5."
The hiring of Kye Martin displaces Matt Rodewald from his role as morning traffic reporter. The Emmy Award-winning Rodewald has been with WMAQ-TV since December 2006. He will be exiting NBC 5, but can still be heard regularly delivering sports reports on WSCR-AM/670 The Score, while he searches for his next television opportunity.
