With little fanfare, the newest national television network, MundoFOX, launched on Chicago television yesterday on WOCK-TV. MundoFOX is the new Spanish-language network created by FOX International Channels, a subsidiary of Fox Entertainment Group, and RCN Television Group of Colombia, South America. Both companies own 50% of MundoFOX, which is based out of Los Angeles, CA.
MundoFOX is aimed at Spanish-speaking television viewers between the ages of 18 and 49. The network officially launched nationwide yesterday with 55 U.S. affiliates, including Chicago's WOCK-TV, four affiliates in Puerto Rico, and one Mexican affiliate just south of the U.S./Mexico border in Texas. The number of affiliates is expected to grow before the end of this year. MundoFOX's programming contains original scripted drama series (produced in Colombia), game shows, UFC MMA events and sports from Fox Deportes, movies, comedies, FOX English programming dubbed into Spanish (including "American Dad" and "Bones"), and live newscasts from its own news division, Noticias MundoFOX.
Using the branding of "Americano Como Tu" (translated to "American, Like You"), MundoFOX is estimated to be able to reach nearly 80% of the country's Hispanic households with this initial launch. The network will now be going head-to-head against more established Spanish-language networks, Univision and Telemundo.
Among the major advertisers already committed to the new network are Toyota, T-Mobile, and L'Oreal.
Locally, MundoFOX now airs on WOCK-TV (officially WOCK-CD), found over the airwaves on digital channel 13.1. The television station's 300 watt transmitter broadcasts from the top of the John Hancock Tower in downtown Chicago.
Owned by the Skokie-based KM Communications Inc., the station previously aired the Spanish language programming of Mega TV since January 2010. That programming has now shifted to WOCK-TV's digital sub-channel 13.5. On WOCK-TV, the new programming will be branded as "MundoFOX 13 Chicago."
While the station's newscasts are currently the national "Noticias MundoFOX" broadcasts at 5:00pm, MundoFOX has not ruled out the possibility of adding to the lineup a Chicago-only newscast exclusively for the MundoFOX 13 Chicago audience in the future.
