Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 28th, at Noon, there will be a press conference at Halas Hall in Lake Forest. It is expected that the Chicago Bears will announce that they have entered into a deal to have Spanish language radio broadcasts of all Chicago Bears games be heard on WLEY-FM/La Ley 107.9 for this upcoming 2012-2013 season.
Scheduled to be at the press conference will be executives from the Chicago Bears organization, members of the Spanish Broadcasting System and WLEY-FM, and Chicago Bears starting center Roberto Garza.
Starting with the first game of the season on September 9th, WLEY-FM/La Ley 107.9 will be the Spanish language flagship station for the Chicago Bears radio broadcasts. Announcing the games will be the new broadcasting team of Jose Luis Marquez (aka "El Pitufo" or "The Smurf") and Liz Liz (aka "La Dama del Deporte" or "The Lady of Sport.") Marquez is a well-respected Chicago radio voice who is also the Program Director and afternoon drive host at La Ley 107.9. He previously was at WNUA-FM/Mega 95.5, where he was the station's Assistant Program Director, Production/Imaging Director and former afternoon on-air personality. Liz Liz is a long time sports broadcaster who has been delivered sports (and traffic) reports in evenings, as well as hosting special sports events/promotions for La Ley 107.9 for years.
This marks the first time in the Chicago Bears long history that they have had an entire season of games broadcast to their Chicago fans in Spanish. The new partnership with the Spanish Broadcasting System's WLEY-FM will bring Chicago Bears football games to the Hispanic community -- the fastest growing population segment in Chicagoland. Nearly one in three residents of Chicago is of Hispanic/Latino origin.
In addition to broadcasting Chicago Bears games on WLEY-FM, the new partnership will also give the radio station a "significant presence" inside Soldier Field during all home games, as well at local team events and on the team's website,
ChicagoBears.com.
La Ley 107.9, which launched in 1997, is one of three radio stations in Chicago with the popular Regional Mexican musical format. The station broadcasts its 21,000 watt signal from a transmitter located in west suburban Glendale Heights, which can be heard clearly by Chicago and most of Chicago's suburbs.
The Chicago Bears contract with WLEY-FM is for Spanish broadcasts only. WBBM-AM/Newsradio 780 (simulcast on WCFS-FM) still has a contract with the Chicago Bears for English language game broadcasts.
