Last week, at an event held at Rockit Bar and Grill, the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) revealed the long list of nominations for the 2011-2012 Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards. Many Chicago area television stations and individuals picked up numerous nominations.
The nominations were open to stations in the Illinois markets of Chicago, Rockford, and Peoria-Bloomington; the Wisconsin markets of Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay-Appleton, and Wausau-Rhinelander, WI; and the Indiana market of South Bend-Elkhart. As is usually the case, the Chicago market dominated the categories overall.
Here is a list of Chicago stations that themselves were nominated, programs aired on their station were nominated, or individuals from their station were nominated. Listed by order of number of nominations, the Chicago television outlets with 2010-2011 season nominations include:
WGN - 36
WMAQ - 25
WLS - 20
WTTW - 19
WSNS - 11
WGBO - 10
WFLD - 10
Comcast SportsNet Chicago - 8
Comcast Chicago - 6
Chicago Blackhawks TV (CSN Chicago) - 6
Chicago Bulls TV (CSN Chicago) - 4

WYCC - 1
A handful of radio personalities are up for some television awards this year. WLS-AM's Roe Conn and WGCI-FM/WKSC-FM's Nina Chantele are nominated as contributors to WLS-TV's "Windy City Live!" WBBM-AM's Jeff Joniak is nominated twice for Chicago Bears for the Chicago Bears Network (aired on WFLD-TV). WVAZ-FM's Doug Banks is nominated as part of the reporter team on WLS-TV's "190 North." Chicago radio legend Steve Dahl's son Patrick J. Dahl is nominated for five Emmys for his producing and/or writing for Blackhawks TV.
For the 2011-2012 College Student Production Awards, local nominees included:
Northwestern University - 8
Columbia College - 6
DePaul University - 3
Northern Illinois University - 1
When narrowing down the nominations, the Chicago/Midwest NATAS only chooses from material sent to them. It is up to the individual stations/performers/producers to submit material, which this year was due by June 15th. Judging is not on what was the best local television of the last year, necessarily, but what was the best from the nominations sent in.
