Clear Channel Media + Entertainment Chicago today promoted Kris Kelley to the role of double Program Director, overseeing both WGCI-FM and WKSC-FM/103.5 Kiss FM. The promotion is effective immediately.
Kelley is a 14-year employee of Clear Channel.
She most recently had been the midday host on Clear Channel's WVAZ-FM/V103, as well as being the longtime Assistant Program Director for WGCI-FM. Today was Kelley's last day on the air as a DJ, however, so that she can concentrate on her new role as double PD. A replacement for her WVAZ-FM role will be named soon.
Kris Kelley first came to Chicago in March 2007, joining WGCI-FM as Program Director and part-time on-air personality. Early on in her time here, Kelley was the Program Director that fired top-rated morning show host Crazy Howard McGee, replacing him with syndicated programming, which ended up with far lower ratings. Two years later, her role was reduced to Assistant Program Director at WGCI-FM and she was given an on-air role at WVAZ-FM.
Prior to coming to Chicago in 2007, Kelley worked as a midday DJ and Assistant Program Director/Music Director at WJLB-FM in Detroit, MI from 1998-2007. Before that, she worked as the midday DJ and Music Director at WAMO-FM in Pittsburgh, PA, where her radio career began.
Kris Kelley is a native of Philadelphia, PA and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.
In this afternoon's announcement, Kris Kelley said: "I am thrilled to join the very talented team of WKSC and continue working with the amazing staff at WGCI. I'm looking forward to continuing to bring great radio to the city of Chicago!"
At WGCI-FM, Kris Kelley is taking back over the Program Director duties from Derrick Brown, who will still retain his duties as Program Director of WVAZ-FM, Director of Urban Programming for the Clear Channel Chicago cluster, and his corporate role of Clear Channel's Urban Format Coordinator. Weekend DJ Al B. Sylk continues in his role as Music Director and a search will begin for a new Assistant Program Director to work under Kelley. Sylk is a Chicago native, but also worked at WAMO-FM with Kelley, so the two have a long history together.
At WKSC-FM, Kelley fills the vacancy left from nearly two months ago when Rick Vaughn was promoted
to Program Director of Atlanta, GA's WKLS-FM and WWVA-FM/WWLG-FM. After what was called a "nationwide search" for a replacement, Clear Channel Chicago stayed in-house and went with one of their own to fill the PD role.
Also at WKSC-FM, afternoon host Jordan will continue as Assistant Program Director, working closely with Kelley, and doing even more than before. Evening DJ Special K remains as Music Director.
Regrading his reasons for the internal promotion of Kelley, Clear Channel Chicago Operations Manager Tony Coles said today: "We have the two most powerful youth targeted brands in the market and I cannot think of anyone more qualified to lead these great stations. Kris Kelley has recruited and developed one of the most talented teams in urban radio and I am excited to now have her expertise as a part of our Kiss strategy."
