WGN-AM & Northwestern University Extend Broadcast Deal

This weekend, WGN-AM and Northwestern University jointly announced a three-year extension to the rights to broadcast Wildcats football and men's basketball games. The new deal allows WGN Radio to be the rightsholder to the broadcasts through the conclusion of the 2015-16 season -- marking 20 straight years of Northwestern's association with the radio station.

WGN-AM has been the flagship home for Northwestern's football broadcasts since the 1996 season.

Dave Eanet
Dave Eanet, who has been WGN-AM's Sports Director since 1996, is a Northwestern alumnus and 2005 Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame honorary inductee. Eanet will continue to be the play-by-play voice for all Northwestern games broadcast on the station. He has called NU's football broadcasts since 1990 and the basketball broadcasts since 1996. Serving as analysts for the broadcasts will Ted Albrecht for football, as well as Tim Doyle and Jitim Young for basketball. Head Coaches Pat Fitzgerald and Bill Carmody will continue to make guest appearances on WGN-AM shows throughout their respective seasons.

Northwestern University's Vice-President for Athletics & Recreation, Jim Phillips, said in this weekend's announcement "The Northwestern Athletics brand has experienced substantial growth over the past several years due in part to the massive reach and presence of WGN Radio. We've been extremely proud to call the station home for 17 years, and to have a wonderful partner in telling the stories of our world-class student-athletes."

WGN Radio's General Sales Manager and Interim General Manager, Jeff Hill added "WGN Radio is proud of the association with Chicago's Big Ten team. We are thrilled to continue to bring the excitement of Northwestern University athletics to our listeners."

As has been the case for years, Northwestern's sports broadcasts will preempt WGN-AM's talk programming. However, in cases when Chicago Cubs or Chicago Blackhawks games are being played at the same time, Northwestern's broadcasts could be broadcast on an alternate station or online only during the period of conflicting schedules.

The excitement level is expected to be high for the 2013 football season, as the 2012 Northwestern Wildcats football team had a 10 win regular season and went on to win the prestigious Gator Bowl championship. So far this season, the Wildcats men's basketball team has been off to a rocky start, though.
