Arbitron's newest division, Arbitron Sports, released its very first comprehensive report entitled, "The Arbitron Sports Report: PPM Listening for Pro Football." The extensive report covers in game, play-by-play estimates for this past 2009-2010 NFL season and includes 25 teams in 23 markets featuring commercialized PPM service.
Among the highlights of this report, it shows that the #1 NFL team nationwide in average audience share is none other than the Chicago Bears. The "Monsters of the Midway" were also "monsters" in average ratings, with their average game audience at 626,600 listeners. No other NFL team was even close. The next runners up were the New York Giants with 457,000 average listeners per game, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles with 422,400 average listeners.
Arbitron Sports Manager Chris Meinhardt said, "Those teams with play-by-play broadcasts have believed for years radio was an integral part of a fan's experience. Now, thanks to the level of audience detail provided by the PPM ratings service, we can see that passion and loyalty, with each professional team averaging more than 100,000 listeners for each broadcast."
The report also shows the incredible shares reached in the Men 25-54 demographic by these football broadcasts. Many cities drew over 40 shares in that demographic alone.
Meinhardt said, "What you see is ratings that closely resemble those in broadcast television for sporting events. Often regardless of a seasonal record, fans follow their team, and radio provides opportunities for fans on the go."
This report merely confirms what WBBM-AM staffers have known for a long time... Being the exclusive radio home of the Chicago Bears is a very good thing indeed.
Arbitron Sports plans on releasing Major League Baseball estimates in just a few weeks. Any guesses on which city will have a pair of teams at or near the top of the list?
