Columbia College To Honor Three Alumni And More

This is a big weekend at Chicago's Columbia College. It is commencement weekend for the school's Class of 2010. In addition to honoring its graduates, the school is also honoring three school alumni with special awards and three individuals with honorary degrees.

Each year at the Columbia College Chicago Commencement, the school honors individuals who have shown themselves to be outstanding in the arts, education, politics and public information and whose life work embodies the college's ideal and spirit.

On Saturday, May 15th at 1:30pm, Bob McNamara will receive his 2010 Alumni Award. McNamara started his career in broadcast news as a copy boy for WBBM-TV. He is now a top news correspondent for CBS News, based out of Dallas. He graduated from CC in 1966 with a degree in Journalism.

On Sunday, May 16 at 10:00am, Laura Steele will receive her 2010 Alumni Award. Steele started out as an intern on Chicago radio with Mitch Michaels on his "Rock & Roll Diner" show. She is now a personality on Indianapolis' Q95 (the home station for nationally syndicated "Bob & Tom Show," where she often guests on) and is a reporter for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Laura (then with the last name Yosha) graduated CC in 1990 with a BA degree in Radio.

On Sunday, May 16 at 3:00pm, Paul Broucek will receive his 2010 Alumni Award. Broucek was a longtime music executive and producer who was named President of Music at Warner Brothers Pictures in 2009. He graduated CC in 1974 with a BA degree in English (Creative Writing) & Music.

This weekend will also find Columbia College handing out three honorary degrees to:
- Dr. Peter Magubane, South African photographer
- Alex Kotlowitz, journalist and author
- Robert Klein, comedian and actor; former Second City member
