In today's News & Notes, ESPN1000 & The Score go to camp, Danny Mac goes to his party, WLS-FM goes to Oak Brook, the Chicago Reader goes sailing, Tribune Interactive goes promoting, Psychedelic Time Warp goes to Okemos, and another big honor is coming for a special lady: Merri Dee. It is all below...
* * It's hard to believe, but football season is almost here. Today is the opening day of the Chicago Bears Training Camp, held down at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. ESPN1000 will be there broadcasting live from the scene today. Starting at 2:00pm this afternoon and going on until 9:00pm tonight, the Afternoon Saloon & Chicago Football Tonight will be doing remotes from the site downstate. The station will be back on Monday & Tuesday next week, as well. Monday has the Afternoon Saloon boys live from Bourbonnais from 2:00pm-6:00pm. Tuesday has both of WMVP-AM's local weekday shows there: Waddle & Silvy from 9:00am-1:00pm and the Afternoon Saloon from 2:00pm-6:00pm. ![]() * * The Score sent down their morning team of Mully & Hanley to Bourbonnais this morning in advance of the official opening of training camp this afternoon. WSCR-AM's Mully & Hanley will be back broadcasting live from Bourbonnais on Monday morning, from 5:00am-9:00am. ![]() * * The following day, Tuesday, August 3rd, WSCR-AM's Danny Mac Show will be broadcasting live from Bears Training Camp in Bourbonnais from 9:00am-1:00pm. However, Dan McNeil and Matt Spiegel will be plenty busy tonight, too. This evening is the big event: "The Danny Mac Show Anniversary Bash." The party to celebrate Danny Mac's 1st year back on the Score Sports Radio will be at Durty Nellies (180 N Smith St., Palatine) from 7:00pm-Midnight. $35 gets the party-goer a BBQ buffet dinner, open bar until 10:00pm, Matt Spiegel's band Tributosaurus, and more. ![]() * * Next Tuesday, August 3rd, WLS-FM's new charity CD, "True Oldies Collection, Volume One" is officially released at all Chicagoland Borders Books locations. However, you can pick up a copy of this new CD on Saturday at a very special CD release party going on at the Oak Brook Borders (1500 16th St., Oak Brook) from 3:00pm-6:00pm. All of WLS-FM's Chicago DJs will be on hand: Dave Fogel, Greg Brown, Danny Lake, and the man himself, Dick Biondi. Tracks on WLS-FM's first CD include: Reunion "Life Is A Rock (WLS Rolled Me)", Aliotta-Haynes-Jeremiah "Lake Shore Drive", Ides Of March "Vehicle", Chicago "Saturday In The Park", The Buckinghams "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)", and many more! Also included is Dick Biondi's early 60's novelty hit, "The Pizza Song"! The CD is a limited edition release. Once it's gone, it's gone. Proceeds from the sales of the CD will go to benefit Children's Home & Aid. ![]() * * The Chicago Reader is hosting a free happy hour & singles cruise on Lake Michigan next Thursday, August 5th. Not only is the cruise free, but the Reader is handing out free PBR to help keep you cool on a warm summer night. It's a pirate-themed cruise on the Tall Ship Windy, which is docked at Navy Pier across from Riva restaurant. Check-in time is 6:45 and the ship takes off at 7:00pm sharp. Advance RSVP is a must and can be done at this link HERE. Casual dress is fine, but pirate attire is highly encouraged. ![]() * * With the recent promotion of Jeff Kapugi, that makes room for others to advance within Chicago-based Tribune Interactive. This week, Julie Anderson was promoted to Senior Vice-President of Content & Integration at Tribune Interactive. She will oversee both the representation team and the market services group, along with assisting in the continued development of the company's newsrooms. Anderson was most recently TI's Vice-President of Content & Integration (just not a Senior VP). Tribune Interactive works with the websites for all of the Tribune's properties, including its 8 newspapers, 23 TV stations, and 1 radio station, as well as many external clients. ![]() * * The excellent streaming radio site with the funny name, Okemos Brewing Company, which is run by former Chicago radio person Dan Kelley, will begin carrying the Chicago-based podcast, "The Psychedelic Time Warp" beginning tonight. It will be streamed on Friday nights at 10:00pm and repeated again on Sunday mornings at 10:00am. The "PTW" two-hour show features hard to find classic rock tunes, including live versions of classic hits, alternate takes, demos, and deep cuts -- from top Classic Rock artists to lost artists to cult favorites. The vast majority of songs played are not available commercially at this time, making it a special treat to hear. "PTW" is the creation of Steve Leventhal of Chicago's SRN Broadcasting and co-host of WKRS-AM's "Weekend Sports Report" with Les Grobstein. Back in the mid-90's, this show was known as "Acid Flashback" when it aired on suburban WCBR-FM. Psychedelic Time Warp is one of the many Chicago-based podcast shows that can be found on the CRM Podcast Page. Also, Okemos Brewing Company is one of the many Chicago-connected Internet radio websites that can be found on the CRM Streaming Radio Page. ![]() * * Advance notice: The Women in Film Chicago will be having their annual Focus Achievement Awards on Thursday, October 14th at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza. Each year, Women In Film Chicago honors a few extraordinary women who have made huge contributions in the areas of film, television, advertising and digital media, and who have strong ties to the Chicago area. This year, they will be honoring three women, principal among them: Chicago broadcasting legend, Merri Dee. Merri Dee got her start in Chicago on south-suburban radio station WBEE, where she was known on-air as "Merri Dee, the Honey Bee". She then found her way to television, working at WCIU-TV, WSNS-TV and WGN-TV. Just under two years ago, she retired after 37 years of working for WGN-TV. (See more about her amazing life story on the CRM Video Page HERE.) The Focus Achievement Awards gala honoring Ms. Dee is also a fundraiser of the Women In Film Chicago, with tickets for the event at a cost of $125 per person. Tickets are not on sale just yet, though. In the next couple of weeks, more information about the event, including ticket sales, will be posted on the Women in Film Chicago website. ![]()
