For two dozen years, David Kaplan has been a Chicago sports media star, hosting top-rated shows on both radio and television, as well as authoring a column in the Chicago Tribune's sports section. He also has proudly been an unabashed Chicago Cubs fan. Using his deep sports knowledge, his love of Chicago's north side baseball team, his sports connections, and his writing skills, Kaplan has authored a new book on baseball's hottest team, the world champion Chicago Cubs.
The new book is entitled "The Plan: Epstein, Maddon, and the Audacious Blueprint for a Cubs Dynasty." As the title suggests, Kaplan's book takes a deep look at how baseball's record-setting "lovable losers" finally were able to obtain a championship after 108 years. Kaplan dissects the organization's winning formula of the new ownership adding the perfect talents in the front office, to the coaching staff, to the players. The author reveals behind the scenes details on every step of the rebuilding process that finally transformed the Cubs into a championship-caliber franchise.
Inside the book, Kaplan has exclusive interviews with the Cubs' President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein, Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, and other key Cubs organization members that helped turn the franchise around. Kaplan examines Epstein's management philosophy and what makes him the best in the business, as he first turned around the Boston Red Sox and then the Chicago Cubs. Kaplan looks at how the Ricketts family came to own the Cubs from the Tribune Company and immediately set out to transform the organization. The book also delivers insight into the methods of Cubs Manager Joe Maddon, important trades that helped build the championship team, and looks at key players including Jake Arrieta, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Kyle Schwarber.
As an added bonus, the Cubs three-time All Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo penned the foreword and Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig writes an introduction to the book.
"The Plan: Epstein, Maddon, and the Audacious Blueprint for a Cubs Dynasty" is currently scheduled to be released on May 1st. The hardcover/clothbound book runs 304 pages and will retail for $24.95. It is being published by the Chicago-based sports book publisher Triumph Books.
