WMVP-AM/ESPN 1000 may not be a flagship radio home for any local baseball team, but as the only Chicago radio station owned by sports broadcasting giant ESPN, there will be plenty of baseball talk heard on AM 1000 this year. Special attention will be given to the World Champion Chicago Cubs, with weekly appearances throughout the 2017 MLB season by some current and former Cubbies.
Host David Kaplan has always been an unabashed Cubs fan, and is one of the most connected media personalities in the city with the north side baseball organization. He will feature plenty of Cubs team inside information on a daily basis.
Joining Kaplan each Tuesday will be Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, with his first appearance this year taking place on April 4th. This will be Rizzo's second consecutive year having a regular segment on Kaplan's program.
"Kap & Co." will also feature frequent call-ins from Cubs front office executives. Don't be too surprised if former Cubs standout David DeJesus joins the show from time to time, as well. DeJesus is the new co-host/analyst
for CSN Chicago's Cubs pre-game and post-game shows, working alongside longtime Cubs pre-game/post-game host Kaplan.
As first reported here
, Kaplan's show "Kap & Co." will be moving to a new time as of April 3rd, heard in the earlier hours of 9:00am-Noon.
Also starting the week of April 3rd, Kaplan's "Cubs Corner" podcast will be found weekly during the MLB season on WMVP-AM's website
and on the audio page on the ESPN mobile app.
WMVP-AM's afternoon show with Tom Waddle and Marc "Silvy" Silverman will have plenty of ESPN baseball experts joining them on a rotating basis, as well. This will include former Cubs pitcher Rick Sutcliffe, who has served as a baseball analyst for ESPN's televised baseball game broadcasts on Wednesday nights since 2002, and working with the network in other capacities since 1999.
It's not just former baseball players coming to the "Waddle & Silvy" show, though. Chicago Cubs' current catcher/outfielder/slugger Kyle Schwarber -- one of the heroes of the 2016 World Series -- will join Waddle and Silverman once a week for a segment. The day of the week and start date for Schwarber's weekly appearances is still being determined. This will be Schwarber's first year being a regular weekly guest on WMVP-AM.
WMVP-AM Cubs beat reporter Jesse Rogers will once again be the only radio reporter in Chicago that will be with the north side baseball team for all 162 games -- both home and away. He will be heard contributing to all three of the station's weekday, daytime local sports talk shows.
The Chicago Cubs' 2017 season opening game, taking place on April 2nd at 7:30pm, will of course be heard on the team's flagship radio home WSCR-AM/670 The Score. However, WMVP-AM will ALSO
carry the game, as the radio station simulcasts "ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball." This will be the national broadcast with ESPN announcers, not the local Chicago broadcast.
On April 10th, the Cubs will have their home opening game at Wrigley Field. In advance of the big game that day, midday hosts Kaplan (9:00am-Noon) and Carmen DeFalco and John "Jurko" Jurkovic (Noon-2:00pm) will broadcast their shows live from Wrigelyville at the Stretch Bar & Grill (3485 N. Clark Street, Chicago).
WMVP-AM's sports talk rival WSCR-AM is expected to announce its Cubs coverage and weekly guest plans for the upcoming season next week.
