They don't sell Dahl on ratings. They sell Dahl based on the fact that he's DAHL. The salespeople go out and tell potential clients that they can get a great deal advertising on Steve's show. Same with Bob Sirott. I'm sure they hope that the retail advertisers don't ASK about ratings.
And it's a pretty simple formula. If Steve brings in more advertising money than his show costs WLS, then it's all good.

They can't sell his ratings and Dahl hasn't been a name in 10 years.

If I had to make a prediction Mike North is hosting afternoons one year from today.

Garry won't accept a lowball offer and Pappy fits the Cumulus MO of hiring a fallen star on the cheap so they can get back on the air.

Dahl reported as hospitalized... expected to be 'short' but you know how that goes. Doubt WLS or Dahl will go much past the contract... maybe til end of year.

Dahl's not going anywhere. He'll be renewed even if his ratings are bad, it doesn't matter. WLS management just cares about heritage names and not really anything else. ( ex. Sirott) I'm surprised they haven't hired the ghost of Wally Phillips to host a show.

Who would replace him? Everyone with brains, ambition, and creative talent left radio about a decade or more ago.

You would think that management could find someone younger or a talk team working in Saint Louis or another city who has better ratings than Dahl and put them on WLS AM

    talent from another market?

The problem with The Stever's show is that he's doing a 4 hour terrestrial radio version of his i hour stream of consciousness internet podcast . That just doesn't work for a News talk radio listener who wants to hear a host's take on current events and the top stories of the day.

...appointment radio years ago, irrelevant since break up with Garry, also years ago.

You would have to be bat shit crazy to sign him to another contract.

    Here's an idea....is Garry available?

@ Uncle Cracker...well then , you can call mgt. at WLS bat shit crazy, because Dahl WILL be re-signed to another contract...

Garry's smart enough to stay out of that place. Podcasting is Meier's future and the same may be said for Brandmeier if and when if decides to podcast. Both will be able to thrive.

I agree Looper, he needs a new surrounding cast - there is no chemistry there. Steve is being loyal to Brandon at the expense of his ratings.

@ Looper,,,,, Dahl sidekicks are fine, that's not the problem with the show. The problem is the lack of compelling content. Most of the time ( with the exception of a few internet stories) Dahl does what he's always done...winging it hoping to eventually find a punchline. Unfortunately for him, that type of approach doesn't work on a News talker.

Dahl refuses to talk about Trump which is a missed opportunity for great comedy material. TV late night show comics like Kimmel, Fallon and Colbert all have been having a field day with Trump stuff. But Dahl won't touch it. He's rather do a half hour on lunch meat. And that's where the ratings problem lies. Not with his surrounding cast, but with Dahl's refusal to evolve his act for a New talk radio station. End result...bad ratings.
