Bia Kelsey just released its list of the radio stations with the most revenue in the U.S. for 2016.
WBBM comes in at $45.0 million, improving its ranking, and is now the 5th highest billing station in America, behind stations in Washington and the far larger-sized markets of New York and Los Angeles.
Again, notably missing from the national list were WGN and WTMX. It doesn't appear that Bia publicly releases specific market information any longer (just a list of the top stations nationally).
During the late 2000s, WGN was the top biller in Chicago, and WBBM and WGN were neck-and-neck. Both stations billed close to $50.0 million. WTMX was in 3rd place.
Last year, Larz noted: WBBM moved up the list from 10th, to sixth place nationally. Now WBBM has moved up to 5th overall in 2016. Larz also noted "WGN-AM saw its revenues slip ever downward once again. For 2015, the one-time market leader in revenue only billed $24.5 million."
You have to wonder what happens when you have a downward revenue spiral like that and now bill less than half of what you used to.
WTMX seemed to be rebounding as they continue to do well in the ratings, but we don't get to see data on that this year.
Even though there used to be more Chicago stations on the list, it's good to see WBBM on it.
